Unpredictable mornings

How to make the most of a morning when you don't know what it'll look like

The baby isn’t home today. He hasn’t been, for the last few days. I had hoped it would make my mornings more predictable.

Au contraire, my nights are much worse. While I can get through the night without disturbances and wake up pretty much at my own convenience, it’s the going to sleep that’s gotten harder.

With my newfound ‘freedom’, I’ve been wasting time in the night. That isn’t the topic of this post.

The topic of this post is those mornings when I do everything right and go to sleep on time. Yet, I don’t know who I’ll be when I wake up in the mornings. What kind of a night the baby is going to have. What kind of a night we are going to have.

Whether the two kinds of unpredictability are similar is again, another topic of discussion. Right now, I’m thinking about ways I can make my mornings the most meaningful, given the kind of night I’ve had.

Sleep could be long or short. It could be continuous or discontinuous. It could be refreshing or stressful. The last one is probably not the right dichotomy. I don’t care.

Do I need to think about eight combinations then? Definitely fewer than eight cuz some would be inconsistent. For example, you can’t have a sleep that’s short, discontinuous yet refreshing.

In fact, pontificating about how the sleep was might not lead to much. What matters more is how I’m feeling in the morning. What my physical energy levels are. What my mental state is - how excited I’m about the day. In short, how refreshed and how ready I feel.

Then, there’s the longlist of things I could and I should and I would like to be doing in the mornings.

Without letting it boil down into a philosophical discussion (do I really need to shower), I’ll make some executive decisions.

Should

  • Get out of bed in 5 minutes of waking up
  • Shit, brush, wash face, sunscreen
  • Fuel up - a banana or dry fruits or whatever
  • Stretch/light exercise unless doing heavy exercise
  • Shower post exercise

Could

  • Heavy exercise - a run or a gym session. Ideally 4-5 times a week
  • Meditation
  • Spend time with the baby

Would like to

  • Read
  • Eat the frog

A lot of this, of course, starts the night before. A man can’t expect to shit well in the morning if he hasn’t eaten well the night before. I’ll soon get around to talking about a good night, insofar as it helps one have a good sleep and a wonderful next day.

If it resonated, you know what to do.
